| Last fall a team in Taiwan finished a hunt through every decent caffeine and sleep experiment on record. They kept only the strict ones: the same person tested twice, once with caffeine and once with a dummy pill, with nobody told which night was which. Sleep diaries did not count. A night only went into the pile if the sleep had been measured with electrodes, in a lab, while the person slept. |
| Twenty two trials made the cut, covering 956 adults. Then the researchers pooled every measured night to see what caffeine actually does to a sleeping person, compared with that same person on a night without it. |

| The caffeine nights (they slept less) |
| Total sleep time fell by about 35 minutes. Sleep efficiency, which is the share of time in bed actually spent asleep, dropped by almost 5 percent, and the deep slow wave sleep went down with it. |
| The placebo nights (they slept) |
| Same people, same beds, same bedtimes. Without the caffeine they fell asleep about 8 minutes faster and kept the sleep they were supposed to get. |
| Every one of those nights was measured by machine, not remembered in the morning. |

| In other words, caffeine did not only make falling asleep harder. It made the sleep itself thinner, and it did that to everybody in the study, the young ones and the middle aged ones alike. |
| None of those 956 people were weak sleepers. Neither are you, and no amount of trying harder was ever going to change what the caffeine was doing. |
| So why does a cup you drank in daylight still reach you in the middle of the night? |
| All day long your brain builds up a chemical called adenosine, and that build up is what sleepiness actually is. Caffeine works by sitting in the spot adenosine needs, so the sleepiness is still there and you just cannot feel it. The catch is how long it sits. Caffeine has a half life of about five hours in most adults, so half of your two o’clock cup is still in you at seven, and about a quarter of it is still there around midnight. Your brain is trying to run the deepest part of the night with a stimulant in the way. |
| Those 956 people never stood a chance against it. Neither did you, I’d bet. |
| That’s the part no one says out loud. In the caffeine trials, people could not tell the difference. They rated their sleep as fine on the caffeine nights while the machines recorded something else entirely… so the night you swear the coffee didn’t touch you is exactly the night it did. |
